Zoom In on Remote Learning

Navigating Online Learning on Your Own

Some institutions will hold online or hybrid classes. If you have never used Zoom or any other digital platform for remote meetings, it’s a good idea to prepare in advance for what will be expected of you. We’ve gathered a few recommendations so you can get ready for the possibility of online learning – and make the most of it.

Finding the right study corner –

It may sound a bit obvious, but it’s worth thinking about your study environment. Here’s what to consider:

Choosing your study environment

  • A quiet space
  • A good internet connection
  • Suitable lighting

Setting up your study space

  • Make sure you have a comfortable chair
  • Keep your desk clear, with study essentials only
  • Remove distractions like your phone from the desk

Getting ready for class –

How can we stay engaged and keep our focus?

Before class:

  • Skim through the previous lesson and the upcoming one, as they appear in the syllabus. It’s also a good idea to have the lesson slides in front of you during class.
  • Eat and drink before/during class. Feelings of hunger and thirst impair thinking, concentration and memory.

During class:

  • During class, it’s important to write notes on the slides, summarize key points and jot down questions that pop into your head.
  • Ask questions during class – asking questions keeps you sharp! Don’t be shy – there are surely students your question has helped
  • Turn your camera on! – It’s much easier to stay present when people can see you.

Breaks

Especially in an online class – you must take a break and refresh!!

The brain needs rest between classes to process information. Recharge yourselves with rest, some physical movement, fresh air outside or nourishing food.

Study friends in online learning

Even when studying online, you can still learn together! How do you do that when learning remotely?

  • Try to create a study group on Zoom
  • Find friends who live nearby and study together
  • If the campus is open – meet at the library or the cafeteria

What will you gain? Friends, academic and emotional support, encouragement, a sense of confidence – and laughs.
